Team Squash End of Season Report - Winter 2015/16
We knew that the 2015/16 season might be demanding as we prepared to nominate teams.
Unavailability through illness and injury, or because of pressure of work, denied us the services of many of the people who had seen us through earlier campaigns. In the case of brothers Ollie and Alex Troop, we were missing two of the people who helped our 1st team get promoted last year. In the cases of Gary Davison, Ron Terry, Eric Stevenson, Mark Fuller and Nick Coole, we have been missing people who could be relied upon match after match. We simply didn’t have the number or quality of replacements required – the return from US exile of Chris Holliman was not quite enough.
We deliberately chose to withdraw the 2nd team of the three that had played in Surrey, leaving us with a 1st team playing in Division 4 and 2nd team occupying the berth of our old 3rd team in Div 8.
At the start of the season, the going got tough … and that was the way it stayed. Squash has something akin to a national ranking points system, so that you can see where you stand against prospective opponents. Our 1st team, in particular, were (un!)comfortably outranked almost every week. Both teams finished bottom of their divisions.
For the first time, we entered a team in the Kent league, and they have had a triumphant season, winning every match they played. Their League Division 6 and Cup double compensated in some way for the travails of the other teams: not least as the same people who were being beaten in Surrey every week had a taste of victory against other opponents. Located where we are, some of our members have played team squash in Kent for other clubs in the past, so it was good to field our own team.
Many thanks to the individual team captains – Nick Easton herded the 1st team manfully, while Paul Webb organised the Kent squad expertly and cooked many a mean chilli: he has a promising career ahead of him.
Many thanks to Eric Stevenson, for all his work behind the scenes as Fixture Secretary and for his unwavering commitment to all the teams.
The main reason we withdrew one team from Surrey was that we didn’t feel we had enough regular, reliable players to filed three teams. But we could easily do so again – so if there are players out there who fancy getting involved in team squash, please get in touch with me: we need new blood.
